Will the River Thames Scheme increase flood risk downstream?

Thames Barrier 776x443

A very informative talk on flood management in the tidal Thames explained how the Thames Barrier is used to manage flood risk from extreme river flow as well as tidal surges, but it left a key question unanswered: what effect will the extra river flow from the proposed River Thames Scheme have on flood risk to London (and the whole area downstream of Shepperton)? Andy Batchelor, Operations Manager - Thames Tidal Defences, received a warm … [Read more...]

Landmark Weybridge building at risk

riverside-studios-church-walk-weybridge-oct-2015

A local landmark building in Church Walk, with a significant history as the first generating station for electric street lighting in England, is at risk. Its fanlight windows with elegant arched brickwork on three aspects are key visual features in the local street scene, as are its traditional proportions, and its courtyard with an open view to the River Wey. All these would be lost if the proposed new design as set out in planning … [Read more...]

2015 Weybridge CIL Funding Applications – PPDRA Responses

The 2015 Weybridge Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) round includes some very significant applications for funding. All such applications require very careful consideration, and the committee of PPDRA has had extensive discussions over which to support in the Elmbridge CIL consultation. Three applications in particular stand out, for different reasons. Two (Broadwater Path and Broadwater) are for projects which have received a lot of … [Read more...]

Weybridge riverside access restored

Weybridge-Riverside-NE-23-09-2014-web

Last November we publicised the continuing lack of access to a stretch of our local riverside – fenced off from the public since the moorings were concreted in 2009.  This January, after more than five years, the ‘temporary’ paling and mesh fence was at last removed, and riverbank access restored. The picture below shows the riverbank reopened. We think removing the fence and undergrowth is a positive step -- the view is restored, and people … [Read more...]

The plans include digging three flood channels to relieve flooding upstream of Weybridge – with the third of these discharging its flood flow into the Thames right on our doorstep, … [Read more...]

Local Green Belt landscape at risk

Land for sale: green belt floodplain Feb 2014

Land at Greenlands Farm has been offered for sale as a 'strategic development opportunity', despite being Green Belt, working floodplain, a potential mineral zone, and an important element of Thames riverside landscape. This is part of the remaining farmland which separates Weybridge from Walton -- a significant piece of local countryside, with traditional hedgerows and field pattern. The farmland helps define the local landscape, and is … [Read more...]

Gravel pit threat persists

PMZ23-map-300

Millions of tons of gravel and aggregate sit below our local Green Belt, and Surrey County Council have parts of north Weybridge earmaked as Potential Mineral Zones, labelled PMZ22 and PMZ23. Quite rightly, these sites have been rejected at successive reviews of which PMZs to excavate, for access and landscape reasons. But Surrey has to  meet targets for gravel extraction, and has regular PMZ reviews, so residents of Weybridge are wise to be … [Read more...]
